When you're engaged, there are so many activities that take up your time and the prospect of spending 3-4 hours in a Bed Bath and Beyond with a scanner gun was not how I wanted to spend my Saturday afternoon. Some people love it but that's not my idea of a good time. For us an online registry was perfect. We also had a lot of out of town guests, so they could have a gift shipped directly to us very easily and they didn't need to have the same store we chose nearby to shop for us.
Since I already order from Amazon.com every three days, an Amazon registry was the natural choice. And they literally sell everything under the sun, at every price point.
The Good
So, there were some big pluses to using Amazon for your wedding registry. Here is what I liked:
- As I said, they sell EVERYTHING and we only had to register at one place and we could choose everything from a sleeping bag for two to new flatware.
- We could add new items whenever and wherever it occurred to us. This was nice because it took us some time to figure out what to put on it, so we could both build it over time.
- They kept a list of what was ordered and it was easy to use for thank yous.
Well, nothing is perfect, here is what I didn't like:
- They offer an "extended return window" but the return policy wasn't really as good as I had expected. I wasn't able to get free returns if I decided I just didn't want something because I got two similar ones, or in one case a guest bought us the item not from the registry and another bought it from the registry, which of course happened. You can still return the item but will have to pay shipping.
- A lot of the benefits Amazon promotes, I didn't find to be that valuable. The registry completion discount of 20% off for example can only be used once and only on items sold directly by Amazon. I never used mine, in part because it wasn't that useful but also because I wasn't sure how I could use it.
- Some items I found hard to shop for because Amazon sells so many different items. Primarily this was glasses. I was constantly shown either stemware or plastic tumblers en mass. I never ended up finding any I liked on Amazon no matter how I searched.
Overall the Amazon registry worked really well for us and I would choose them again, though maybe make some different choices in the setup, such as not putting similar items on it.
