Weight Watchers on a budget - Aldi shopping list

I joined Weight Watchers in an attempt to get healthy! While I thought I ate pretty healthy, there was a lot of sugar and carbs in my diet and not enough vegetables.

To keep WW more affordable, I recommend shopping mostly at Aldi where fruit and vegetables are very affordable compared to "mainstream" stores. If you're new to Aldi, check out my post on shopping there as it has a few quirks. If you need help with kitchen equipment that can help you with WW, check out my post on preparing your kitchen for success. I also really like Trader Joe's for fancier items, check out my TJs shopping list for WW before your next trip there.

So what should you buy to help you on your WW journey?

All point values below were updated in March 2021 on the MyWW+ program, the points listed are for the blue plan. I recommend using your scanner to double check point values.

Let's start with the fun stuff, the snacks! A lot of my snacks on the program are fruits and raw vegetables because they are mostly zero points but occasionally we all need a treat. Work the plan!

Snacks
For most processed foods, you will want to look for Aldi's "Fit & Active" brand. I like:
  • Fit & Active wildberry yogurt bars (5pts, these are my favorite low point "ice cream")
  • Fit & Active mini cheddar rice cakes (4pts for 17)
  • Fit & Active salted or caramel rice cake (1pt salted and 2pts caramel, each)
  • Penguin crackers (4pts for 52, these are basically knock off goldfish but I actually prefer the taste of Aldi's)
  • Frozen fruit (beware of the WW "smoothie rule")
  • Lunch buddies unsweetened applesauce (0pts, unfortunately the cinnamon and strawberry applesauces have points)
  • Pickles (0pts)
  • Savoritz reduced fat cheese crackers (knock off cheese-its, 3pts/serving - that's 32 crackers!)
  • Savoritz reduced fat thin wheat crackers (knock off wheat thins 4pts for 16 crackers)
  • Elevation carb conscious protein bar caramel nut flavor (5pt, this tastes like a snickers bar, it's delicious.) or peanut butte crisp flavor
  • Individual hummus cups (3pts for a 2oz cup of regular or roasted red pepper)
  • Individual Chocolate hummus cups (7pts but very tasty)
  • Simply Nature Sea Salt Popcorn (4pts for 3 3/4 cups or 1oz)
  • Simply Nature Cauliflower crackers (4pts for 44 crackers)
  • Fit & Active 100 calorie snack pack, chocolate wafers (4pts/pack)
Bread
Aldi sells a version of most of the lower calorie bread options you see full-priced stores. Just avoid the chocolate cake which is usually right next to the bread (unless you are splurging because it's delicious).

  • Fit & Active Multi-grain bread (1pt/slice)
  • L'oven Fresh Sandwich Skinnys Multigrain rolls (3pt)
  • Fit & Active Multi grain wraps (2pts, similar to flat-out wraps)
  • L'oven Fresh 100% whole wheat mini bagels (4pts)
  • L'oven Fresh plain or everything bagel skinnys (3pts)

One thing I haven't found at Aldi is a 1 point tortilla. I have scanned all the ones my store sells and even the low carb tortilla is 3pts. The Fit & Active Multi grain wraps are similar and could be used in a pinch but I go to another store and buy La Banderita Whole Wheat Low Carb Tortillas. I buy mine locally but if you cannot find them, they are available on Amazon here.

Produce
Buy as much of your produce at Aldi as you can. Aldi has the best prices on produce and you will be eating much more than you were before! All fruit and vegetables except potatoes, sweet potatoes, avocados and maybe a few others are zero points. I eat 6-8 servings of fruit and vegetables a day when working the program! It goes really quickly.

Definitely look for these items at your Aldi, they began selling these at mine in Spring 2018, so keep your eye out for:
  • Cauliflower rice - at my location they only sell fresh, no frozen
  • Spiralized zucchini & butternut squash to use as "noodles" (or you make your own with this gizmo)
Additionally, I buy:
Veggies, hummus and cherries for snack time!
  • Bags of apples
  • Bags of oranges
  • Romaine hearts and spring mix
  • Fresh pineapple (my darling husband cuts it up for me)
  • Berries (they will go on sale for around $1 per container in the summer)
  • Zucchini (to sprialize)
  • Celery
  • Bags of bell pepper
  • Persian cucumbers (the mini kind)
  • Avocado (they will go on sale for around .50 each. They are not zero points, but I love them so I buy them in moderation)
Basically the whole produce section is in my cart!

Meat & Dairy

Unfortunately, Aldi doesn't sell 99% fat free ground turkey, so I usually go to another store to buy that but if you want to save a few bucks they do have:
  • 93% fat free ground turkey (3pts/3oz)
  • Fit & Active Italian Turkey Sausage (4pts/link)
  • Breakfast turkey sausage links (2pts/serving)
  • ground chicken
  • chicken breasts fresh and frozen
  • Mama Cozzi Turkey pepperoni (16 slices/1pt)
  • Fit & Active oven roasted turkey lunchmeat (1pt/2oz)
  • Fit & Active honey smoked ham (1pt/2oz)
  • Deveined frozen shrimp
  • Reduced fat cheese in several varieties included cheddar, mozzarella, feta, Mexican blend (2-3pts/serving)
  • Happy Farms cheese wedges in original and garlic and herb (similar to laughing cow,  1pt/wedge)
  • Plain Greek yogurt
  • Unsweetened vanilla almond milk (1pt)
  • Egg whites
  • Cage free eggs (my store started selling these in 2017)

Sauces
  • Fit & Active reduced fat ranch (3pts/2 Tbsp)
  • Fit & Active reduced fat Italian or light balsamic (1pt/2 Tbsp)
  • Powdered peanut butter (in my opinion their powdered PB is tasteless, I strongly prefer PBFit, 1pt/2Tbsp)
  • Simply Nature organic marinara sauce (2pts for 1/2 cup)
  • Burman's cocktail sauce (4pts for a 1/4 cup serving but usually a 1-2pt amount is plenty for me)
  • Burman's light mayo (1pt/Tbsp)
  • Burman's honey, Dijon or spicy brown mustard (0pts/tsp)
  • Tika Marsala Simmer sauce (3pts/serving, great with chicken breast and cauliflower rice!)

I will keep adding new things to the list as I discover them!

Trader Joe's Weight Watchers shopping list

Trader Joe's has long been one of my favorite places to grocery shop! Not only do they have staples but they have amazing frozen food and lots of unique items that other stores don't carry. It's basically a hippie paradise of alternative foods. It's also amazing when you don't have lot of time to cook or meal prep because they have so many great pre-made and frozen foods. We can't meal prep all the time now can we? The really annoying thing about my TJ's store is there is NO internet or cell reception! Which means I cannot check point values while I'm in the store. Thus, it has been challenging for me to shop there and took a lot of trips to put this list together. If there are other must-haves from TJs please comment and I will update! If you're looking to save a few bucks on more basic items, check out my Aldi shopping list here . Or if you are new to WW check out my tips for getting your kitchen ready. The 3 worst pieces of real estate advice

Let me say that I am not a landlord expert but I am often shocked at the horrendous advice offered up as wisdom on landlording forums. Don't get me wrong, networking groups (online and in-person) can be a great resource as you try to learn the ropes but be wary of some advice - even if it's what you want to hear! So here it is, the worst advice you can take when starting your landlording journey and my alternative advice! Photo by  PhotoMIX Ltd.  from  Pexels 1) Get an FHA loan, even if you're not going to live in the house. When someone is trying to buy a property but doesn't have enough money to put down, "get an HA loan" is often tossed out but this kind of loan is only for owner occupied properties and when you apply for it you're agreeing to live in the house for a certain length of time. I am shocked when I see this suggested to people online, not only is it mortgage fraud but those suggesting it are pretty cavalier to suggest it ...
