Grocery delivery is the new, hot service. I have to admit I have been slow to get on the bandwagon because...
- I like to choose my own produce
- I don't want to pay a delivery fee
- I don't want to have to tip a driver (I'd never not tip them, but would go get my own groceries so I didn't have to)
- I don't have kids - if I did, I can see myself doing grocery delivery all the time!
However, I do look for any way that I can get extra value from my Amazon Prime membership and when Amazon offered me $5 off as a no-rush shipping credit (one of my favorite things!) I thought I'd give it a whirl.
The basic situation
You can browse the offerings at primenow.com to see what is available for delivery. I've now ordered from Prime Now twice, once I took Amazon up on a no-rush shipping credit for Prime Now, they offered me several more! The key information:
- Delivery is only free if you order at least $35 - even if you are a Prime member.
- They don't have everything. I found their produce selection to be somewhat limited, it's kind of like shopping at Aldi, there aren't 35 kinds of lettuce. For example, in my area they had frozen spinach but I wanted frozen diced onions and they didn't have those.
- You should tip your delivery driver; I used my $5 credit to give them a $5 tip.
- There are Amazon and Whole Foods items listed but they aren't the same shopping cart; you need to meet the minimum in one category.
Since they don't have everything, there is a minimum order and the extra tip cost, it will probably not ever become my weekly grocery option but when we came from a weekend away and had nothing to eat, it was really nice to have groceries delivered.
Produce
Note that I ordered from Amazon products only, not Whole Foods because I needed some things that were Amazon only.
Having someone else choose my produce for me is a little bit scary. The first time I ordered from Prime Now, I only got dry goods but the second time I was bolder because I needed food for the week and didn't have any vegetables.
I bought:
- A head of lettuce
- Pint of cherry tomatoes
- 2 packages of broccoli florets
- Bunch of bananas
Overall the produce quality was pretty good. I was disappointed with the selection of lettuce offered and my lettuce was a little wilted when it arrived. My husband put it in some water and it perked up.
If you order from Whole Foods, there are more produce options but I found a lot of their choices to be pretty pricey (Whole Paycheck anyone?).
Generally, I found the Prime Now prices to be reasonable. It's not a low-cost grocery option like Aldi but it's lower than some of the fancy grocery stores in my area. The second time I ordered, I actually had kind of a hard time reaching the $35 threshold getting what I needed based on what they had. I ended up ordering 3 bottles of the salad dressing my husband likes! Of course, they were only 8oz bottles because that's all they had☺
